Knewz is a personalized, audio-first news app we built for a US client in about three months, shipping to both app stores. Readers get AI voice summaries and local news by location, while a web publisher panel lets the newsroom manage and moderate content with analytics.

The challenge
The client wanted readers to keep up with the news on the go, and wanted publishers feeding that content managed from one connected product rather than separate systems. We built Knewz as a single product: a Flutter app for readers on iOS and Android, and a web panel for the publishers and admins behind it, with an AI summarizer turning full articles into short audio bulletins.

What we built
Built in Flutter for iOS and Android with a web publisher panel, RSS import, moderation tools and behaviour-based notifications. An OpenAI-backed summarizer condenses articles for an audio reader, and separate admin and publisher APIs manage categories, articles and accounts. Shipped to both app stores in about three months.

How it works
- A publisher imports articles via RSS or submits them directly, then moderates them in the publisher panel.
- An OpenAI-backed summarizer condenses each article for the audio reader.
- A reader opens the app and sees a personalized feed plus local news for their location.
- The reader plays a top story's audio summary or a bulletin covering several stories.
- The app sends behavior-based notifications to bring the reader back for new stories.
- Publishers check the web dashboard's analytics to see how their articles performed.
Where the AI fits
Knewz uses OpenAI to summarize full articles into short text suited for an audio reader, which is then voiced into morning-to-night audio bulletins. Personalized and local news surfacing draws on retrieval over the reader's profile and location rather than a single static feed, so the content shown and read aloud stays relevant to each reader.

How it’s built
Knewz is built in Flutter for iOS and Android, with a separate web publisher panel and admin panel sharing a set of PHP APIs split by role: user, publisher and admin. Splitting the APIs this way kept reader-facing traffic isolated from publisher and admin operations like RSS import and moderation. The OpenAI summarization step sits between article ingestion and the audio reader, so publishers moderate the source article while readers consume a shorter, voiced version. The whole product shipped to both app stores in about three months.
