ODE

An IDE built around a coding agent

ODE is our own desktop IDE built around an AI coding agent rather than around a text editor. The chat is the primary pane; a real Monaco editor, file tree, terminal and agent-drivable browser sit around it so every change the agent makes is easy to review, diff and undo. It's coming soon for macOS, Windows and Linux.

Why we’re building it

Most AI coding tools start from a normal editor and bolt a chat sidebar onto the side. That keeps the agent secondary, when for many tasks the agent is doing most of the work and the editor's real job is verifying it. We're building ODE the other way around: a full agent runtime at the center, with the editor, terminal and browser as the places you check its work, review diffs and take back control, aimed eventually at PhpStorm-class tooling with an agent at the center instead of the edge.

Who uses it

Solo full-stack dev
Ships features with an agent but wants to review every file it touches before trusting it, often with several tasks running in one codebase.
Agent power user
Already works from a terminal agent and wants the same slash commands, model switching and subagents with a real GUI and diffs.
Agency dev (v2/v3)
Deploys to client servers over SFTP and inspects remote databases alongside the agent workflow.

What we built

A React and TypeScript desktop app (Tauri) for macOS, Windows and Linux that pairs a Monaco editor, file tree, real terminal and an agent-driven browser with a chat-first agent runtime. It works with Claude and OpenAI accounts or your own keys, with per-prompt diff review and revert, a usage and cost dashboard and a built-in git client, all running locally.

  • Chat-first agent runtime

A full command surface of slash commands and GUI equivalents, with the chat panel as the primary pane rather than a sidebar.

  • Monaco editor + LSP

A full-featured code editor with language server support for verifying and tweaking what the agent produced.

  • Per-prompt diff and revert

Every agent prompt is checkpointed through a shadow git repo, reviewable as a diff and revertable independently of the user's own git history.

  • Real integrated terminal

A real PTY terminal the agent can run commands in visibly, not a hidden shell.

  • Agent-drivable embedded browser

A native browser the agent can open, evaluate JavaScript in and read DOM/console/network state from, to check its own web output.

  • Provider accounts, OAuth or BYOK

Works with the user's own Claude or OpenAI accounts or API keys, with a model picker and thinking-level control.

  • Native git GUI

Status, stage, commit, branch, merge, history, blame and three-way conflict resolution, built from the GUI over the user's real repository.

  • Usage and cost dashboard

Local SQLite usage records give a running view of request volume and spend per provider.

How it works

  1. Open a project; ODE loads the file tree and a chat-first dockable layout.
  2. Sign in with a Claude or OpenAI account, or supply your own API key.
  3. Type a request in chat; the agent plans and makes changes through a local sidecar process.
  4. Review the agent's changes as a per-prompt diff in Monaco, with revert available at any point.
  5. Check results in the integrated terminal or the agent-drivable embedded browser.
  6. Commit through the native git GUI once the change looks right.

Where the AI fits

ODE's agent engine runs as a bundled headless sidecar process, one per chat session, speaking newline-delimited JSON over stdio. A Rust-side Agent Bridge translates the engine's protocol into ODE's own event schema, strips engine-specific names and vocabulary before anything reaches the UI, and exposes IDE-native capabilities back to the agent as host tools, such as opening a file, showing a diff, or running a terminal command. The engine works with the user's own Claude or OpenAI accounts or API keys; ODE never proxies traffic to a hosted model of its own.

  • Works with Claude (Anthropic) and OpenAI accounts, OAuth or BYOK, provider-agnostic runtime
  • Host tools let the agent open files, show diffs, run terminal commands and drive the embedded browser
  • Every agent change is a reviewable, revertable checkpoint via a per-project shadow git repo
  • Approval policy gates mutating actions; engine identifiers are redacted from the UI by design

Every part of the product

  • Desktop app

    Tauri + React + TypeScript

The single ODE app for macOS, Windows and Linux, running entirely locally with no required account.

  • Chat panel

    React

The primary pane: streamed agent replies, tool-call cards, approval cards and session tabs.

  • Code editor

    Monaco

Full editing and diff review of files the agent has touched.

  • Terminal

    xterm.js + Rust PTY

A real terminal the user or the agent can run commands in.

  • Embedded browser

    Tauri webview bridge

A browser surface the agent can drive and read back state from to verify web app changes.

  • Git GUI

    Rust core

Commit, branch, merge, history, blame and conflict resolution over the user's own repository.

How it’s built

ODE's agent engine is a licensed, white-labeled sidecar binary (MIT-licensed oh-my-pi), launched per chat session and kept behind a Rust Agent Bridge that is the only code aware of its wire format, version-pinned with a compatibility test suite against each pinned build. Provider credentials live only in the OS keychain, never on disk or synced, and database/FTP connection passwords never cross the Tauri IPC boundary, only a has-secret flag does. The frontend is React, TypeScript, Vite and Tailwind with Radix primitives and Dockview for a user-configurable, chat-first panel layout, while every privileged operation, filesystem access, process spawning, credential reads, happens in the Rust core behind named IPC commands, never in the webview.

Questions about ODE

What is ODE?

ODE is a desktop IDE from Venzpire, currently coming soon, built around an AI coding agent as the primary surface instead of a bolted-on chat sidebar. A real Monaco editor, terminal and agent-drivable browser surround the chat so every change the agent makes can be reviewed, diffed and reverted.

Which platforms will ODE run on?

ODE ships as a single Tauri desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, built with React and TypeScript. Everything runs locally; Venzpire designed it with no required ODE account, license server or telemetry.

How does ODE use AI?

ODE runs a bundled agent engine as a local sidecar process that works with the user's own Claude or OpenAI account or API key. A Rust bridge translates its protocol, exposes IDE capabilities like opening files or running terminal commands back to the agent, and every change lands as a reviewable, revertable diff checkpoint.
