Kindorra
A floating companion for gentle screen-time accountability
Kindorra is an Android app built around a persistent floating companion character that sits on screen, tracks daily, usage and focus goals, and notices app usage without blocking anything outright. We built it as a companion that notices and encourages rather than a timer that locks you out.

The challenge
Screen-time tools tend to land at one of two extremes: an app that is basically invisible until it suddenly blocks you, or a punitive system of hard limits that people turn off within a week. We built Kindorra around gentle accountability instead: a draggable companion that stays quiet most of the time, reacts to meaningful moments, and lets the user keep going past a limit if they choose to, with everything stored locally first and only the minimum usage context ever touching AI.
Who uses it
- Primary user
- Drags the floating companion anywhere on screen, sets daily and focus goals, and gets gentle nudges about app usage instead of hard blocks.
What we built
A Kotlin Android app with a draggable floating companion that walks, runs, rests and goes quiet, local-first storage with Room, and Google sign-in through Firebase. Users set daily, usage and focus goals, and the companion can speak short, context-aware nudges built from minimal on-device usage data.
Floating companion overlay
A draggable, edge-snapping character with idle, walking, running, charging and quiet-mode states shown as a persistent overlay.
Goals system
Daily, usage, focus and manual goals, each tracked with a Completed, Partially Completed or Missed status and a daily reset.
Focus sessions
A focus timer with a dedicated companion state, optional soft intervention, pause, early exit and a session history summary.
App usage dashboard
Today, week and month views of monitored app usage, with per-app daily limit configuration and intervention records.
Gentle over-limit handling
Hitting a configured app limit offers a temporary allowance or an Open Anyway choice instead of a hard block.
Reminders
Create, edit, snooze and recur reminders, with Done, Later or More choices and a small celebration on completion.
Personalization
Built-in male and female avatars, a paid custom photo avatar option, personality and text-to-speech settings.
Permission-aware operation
Guided prompts for notification, display-over-other-apps and usage-access permissions, with graceful degradation if any are denied.
How it works
- Sign in with Google and set up a profile: name, date of birth and initial goals.
- Grant the permissions Kindorra needs, with guidance for each and graceful fallback if declined.
- The companion appears as a draggable overlay and settles into an idle or monitoring state.
- Daily, usage and focus goals accrue through the day, each ending Completed, Partially Completed or Missed.
- Hitting a monitored app's limit surfaces a gentle nudge with a temporary allowance or Open Anyway choice, not a hard block.
- A short, context-aware motivational message from the companion marks meaningful moments, like a completed focus session.
Where the AI fits
Kindorra's only AI use is generating short, contextual motivational messages that the companion surfaces at specific moments, such as finishing a focus session or missing a daily goal. It is deliberately narrow: there is no chat interface, no AI screen and no conversation history in V1, just a single generated line of text per event. Requests include only the minimal on-device usage context needed for that message, in line with the app's local-first, privacy-aware design.
- AI output is limited to short contextual motivational messages, not a chat assistant
- Only minimal on-device usage context is sent with each request
- No AI screen, chat history or AI management UI in V1
- Optional text-to-speech can read the generated message aloud

Kotlin + XML Views
The single Kindorra app: floating overlay, goals, focus sessions, usage dashboard, reminders and settings.
How it’s built
Kindorra is local-first by design: Room is the primary data store for goals, focus sessions, usage history and reminders, and Firebase is used only for Google sign-in authentication, with no Firestore sync or cloud backup in V1. The floating companion runs as a system overlay with saved position and edge-snapping, driven by an event-based state machine rather than a polling loop, which keeps battery impact low since rich animation only plays on meaningful state changes. App usage monitoring uses Android's usage-access APIs rather than continuous background tracking, and every permission the app needs (notifications, display-over-other-apps, usage access) has its own guided prompt and a degraded but working fallback if the user declines it.

Questions about Kindorra
What does Kindorra do?
Kindorra is an Android app with a persistent floating companion character that tracks daily, usage and focus goals and nudges the user about app usage instead of blocking it outright. Venzpire built it around gentle accountability: the companion mostly stays quiet and reacts to meaningful moments rather than enforcing hard limits.
Does Kindorra block apps when I hit a limit?
No. Kindorra is built to avoid hard blocking in V1. Hitting a configured app limit offers a temporary allowance or an Open Anyway choice, so the user stays in control while still being made aware of the limit.
How does Kindorra use AI?
Kindorra uses AI narrowly, to generate short, contextual motivational messages the companion shows at specific moments like finishing a focus session. Venzpire kept the requests to minimal on-device usage context, with no chat interface or AI screen in the app.
