My Deductibles is a Flutter app for iOS, Android and web, built for a US audience, that lets people record non-cash charitable donations one item at a time. Each item gets an estimated value, and the app keeps a running total of donations and tax savings by month and year.

The challenge

People who donate goods to charity, clothing, furniture, household items, rarely have an easy way to record each item's value at the time they give it. By tax season the receipts are scattered or lost, and reconstructing a deduction is guesswork. We built My Deductibles so donors can log every item as they give it, with a value estimate and a receipt attached, so the full picture is ready when they file.

What we built

Built in Flutter for iOS, Android and web with a Firebase backend and a PHP API. Donors add items to a donation, scan a receipt barcode or QR code to attach it, estimate value per item with the built-in calculator, sort donations by category and organization, and see total donations and total tax savings for a selected month or year.

  • Item-by-item donation log

    Each donation is broken into individual items, not a single lump amount, for a more defensible record.

  • Built-in value calculator

    Donors estimate the deductible value of each item using the app's calculator rather than guessing a number.

  • Receipt barcode/QR scan

    A receipt's barcode or QR code can be scanned to attach it to a donation.

  • Category and organization sorting

    Donations are sorted by item category and by the receiving organization for easier review.

  • Monthly and yearly totals

    The home screen shows total donations and total tax savings for a selected month or year.

  • Cross-platform access

    The same app runs on iOS, Android and web, backed by a shared Firebase and PHP API backend.

How it works

  1. A donor gives items to a charity and opens the app to start a new donation.
  2. They add each item, using the built-in calculator to estimate its deductible value.
  3. They scan the receipt's barcode or QR code to attach it to the donation.
  4. The item is filed under a category and the receiving organization.
  5. The home screen updates total donations and tax savings for the current month and year.
  6. At tax time, the donor reviews totals by year across all logged donations.

How it’s built

My Deductibles is built in Flutter so the same codebase ships to iOS, Android and web, with Firebase handling app data and a PHP API as a secondary backend layer. Receipt capture uses a standard barcode/QR scanner package rather than any vision or OCR service, keeping that step simple and offline-friendly. Donation value estimation runs through a built-in calculator in the app, and totals are aggregated per month and year so a donor can see tax-relevant figures without digging through individual entries.
