Spartan lets people join paid step-count challenges and earn real payouts for hitting their targets. We built the Android app that tracks activity in the background, the wallet for balances and withdrawals, and the admin panel that runs the challenges.

The challenge

Running step-count challenges with real payouts needs reliable activity tracking and a way to manage plans, approvals, and withdrawals at scale, since any gap between what a phone reports and what actually happened turns into a payout dispute. Spartan needed background step and GPS tracking it could trust, a wallet that handles real money carefully, and an admin side that can approve subscriptions and withdrawals rather than paying out automatically.

How it works

  1. User subscribes to a step plan and pays in.
  2. Admin approves the subscription, activating the user's challenge participation.
  3. App's background service tracks steps and GPS as the user walks.
  4. User follows progress against the active challenge inside the app.
  5. User requests a withdrawal from the wallet, which an admin reviews and approves.

How it’s built

Because withdrawals pay out real money, Spartan keeps approval steps in the admin panel rather than letting subscriptions or withdrawals process automatically: admins approve a plan subscription before it activates and a withdrawal request before it pays out. Step and GPS tracking run through a background Android service, so progress keeps recording through a challenge without requiring the app to stay open. Admins can also edit the in-app how-to-play and terms content directly, so rule changes don't require an app update.
