Chill5 is a TikTok-style short-video social app built for Android and iOS. People record and trim clips in an in-app camera, share them to a Discover feed, and chat with friends, all in a UI localized into seven Indian regional languages.

The challenge
Short-video apps were taking off in India, but most were not built for the country's language diversity. Chill5 needed a full record-edit-share loop, a social feed with likes and comments, direct chat, and a UI that felt native in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali and Urdu as well as English, across both Android and iOS from day one.

What we built
Venktesh led Chill5 as its CTO for a year. Users record and trim short videos in an in-app camera, then share them to a Discover/Home feed with likes, comments, hashtags and a Stars section for featured creators. The app has direct chat with text, photo and voice messages, a following system, event listings, and push notifications, with the UI translated into Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali and Urdu alongside English.
In-app camera
Record and trim short videos directly in the app before posting, no external editor needed.
Discover and Home feeds
Vertical video feeds with likes, comments and hashtags surface trending and followed content.
Stars section
A dedicated area highlights featured creators separately from the regular feed.
Direct chat
One-to-one messaging with text, photo and voice messages alongside the video feed.
Following system
Users follow creators to build a personalized feed of people they care about.
Event listings
A listings area surfaces events relevant to the community.
Push notifications
Firebase Cloud Messaging alerts users to likes, comments, follows and chat messages.
7-language localization
Full UI translation into Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali and Urdu, plus English.

- Tap the camera, record a clip, trim it, and add a caption or hashtags.
- Post the video to the feed where it collects likes and comments.
- Follow creators from the Stars section or the feed to build a personal feed.
- Message a friend directly with text, a photo or a voice note.

How it’s built
Both apps are native (Kotlin on Android, Swift on iOS) rather than cross-platform, which kept in-app video recording and trimming smooth on a wide range of devices. Firebase underpins authentication, storage, the realtime database, Cloud Messaging and crash reporting on both platforms, with Firebase Dynamic Links and Facebook login for sign-in and sharing. Seven-language localization meant every screen, not just a subset, was built to support right-to-left-adjacent scripts and varying text lengths from the start.
